Layla and I returned last night from a wonderful trip to Salt Lake City to visit family and friends, and to escape the miserable Phoenix summer. Layla was overjoyed with the weather and spent every possible minute outside in Grandma's yard. She was entertained for hours with a few toys and a bucket of water which she poured on herself, Jasmine the dog, and anyone else who was within reach. She also loved digging for worms, bugs, slugs and spiders and pouring them onto a plate to observe and play with.
After Grandma's house, Layla's favorite place in Salt Lake is Wheeler Farm. It is a city-run, full functioning farm, complete with tractors, a river, a duck pond, and plenty of animals to pet and feed. It is close enough to walk to from Grandma's, so Layla convinced someone to take her at least three times a week.
I was amazed at how comfortable she was with the animals. Last year she would get scared if one touched her or made aggressive noises, but this year she had no fear. She fed the goats and rabbits right out of her hands and almost lost a finger!
We got to see our great friends the Chases, and Layla and Etta had a blast swimming at the New Haven pool and eating a picnic lunch in the tee-pee. We are very blessed to have family and friends so close and to have the resources to travel often to see them. A big thank you to everyone in Salt Lake for your hospitality in opening your hearts and homes when Layla come for our long visits (especially Grandma & Grandpa and Mimi & Brit). We love you all very much.

Annnyyyy time! It's always a blessing to have you over. Layla is growing up so quickly and really is quite a delightful little girl (well, 10% of the time she is frightful!).
The other part of our daily ritual was the goldfish. Layla would come to my office and ask for goldfish, and Jasmine would hear it and come running from the far reaches of the house. Then Layla would proceed to eat them and feed them to Jazz. It was a very entertaining ritual to watch!
