On Tuesday Kassidi and I were talking and decided it would be fun to take a quick weekend trip to San Diego with our families. On Wednesday we had our husband's approval, and on Saturday at 4 am we were in the car and on our way. We were sure the girls would crash as soon as we got going, but they were both so excited about Sea World and the beach that they couldn't stop talking about seeing sharks and whales and dolphins! They did get a bit of sleep during the 5 1/2 hour drive, but not nearly enough.
Sea World was a blast, enjoyed equally by the girls and their parents. We hit the shark exhibit first since they had watched Shark Tale in the car and were eager to see some animals. They were amazed, especially when we got to stand under the tunnel and watch the sharks swim over and around us. Layla asked to go back several times.
We saw the dolphin show and Shamu, of course. I think Layla enjoyed the shows, but used them as her down time, to relax and be entertained. She really got excited about all of the animals, from the sea lions and stingrays to the small fish and frogs. Both girls were amazingly well behaved and stayed alert and interested in every exhibit. They each got to pick out a toy right before we left, and both chose plush sharks.
On Sunday we went to Del Mar beach, Ryan's and my favorite place in San Diego. It has a gorgeous beach and a fun, quaint town that is just the right mix of local gems and tourist shops. The water was cold, but that didn't stop Layla from running right in! She loved it until she was tackled by a wave and got a mouthful of salt water.
The girls and the dads built a big sandcastle and ran around while the pregnant moms laid out, relaxed, walked and ate.
Layla's favorite game was trying to throw sand at Ryan. He would stand right where the tide rushed up, and Layla would grab handfuls of sand and chase him trying to get him, but only until the tide came up, then she would race to escape the water creeping at her feet. Very funny.
It was a quick and exhausting trip, and a lot of driving for the short time we were there, but everyone agreed it was completely worth it. Layla has talked about it non-stop since we got back, and she hasn't gone anywhere without her shark, Lenny.

Looks like you had a blast! I did sound exhausting though... but still made me want to go. I miss San Diego so much. I really hope Merritt and I make a trip over there this summer. It's so close!
How fun! That is great to be that close to hit San Diego, Sea World and the Beach in one weekend. Totally worth it and LOVE the pictures.
You look awesome!
Yeah! It was so fun! I really need to get our pictures up. Yours turned out so well! I love the one where Layla fell down in the tide. She's so silly!
