This Labor Day weekend we decided to rent a cabin up in Show Low, AZ with our good friends, the Fords. It was a good thing we went for the cabin instead of trying to camp, because it rained every day we were there, and some of the downpours were so heavy that a tent would have floated away. But there were some sunny times too, and we had a wonderful weekend. It seems to me that no matter what we do, if we're with family and good friends we always have a great time.
Our first day we went to the Corn 'N' Que festival in Taylor, AZ. It was apparently a celebration of the local sweet corn harvest and the Arizona state BBQ competition, along with craft booths, inflatable bouncers for the kids, and a small petting zoo. The food was INCREDIBLE and Layla had a blast at the petting zoo, where she would grab the animals by the neck and make them kiss her. Yes, she did this to goats, rabbits, cats and a chicken. We aren't going to be leaving her alone with the baby until we make sure this phase is past.
Layla got to go on a walk in the rain with Ryan, and they ended up playing outside in the mud for almost an hour. She had the time of her life! She came back and excitedly told me that she had made strawberry birthday cake and spaghetti and meatballs (which I could have guessed by the mud covering every inch of her clothing).
We also got to spend some time at nearby Fool's Hollow Lake. Ryan, Layla and I took a picnic there on Monday on our way out of town and walked around the lake for a bit before lunch. Layla wanted to go out on a dock where several people were fishing, and we got to see one of them reel in a huge carp that must have been at least 13 lbs. Layla was SO excited and has wanted to go fishing since then (although she says she is going to catch a shark). I love taking vacations with our friends and our kids, and I look forward to many more trips like this in the future.

She's starting to look like a big girl!
It's always a plus to get out of this heat too!! Looks like you had a great time.
You should post some belly pics :)
What a great little get away. I would have loved to see darling little Layla covered head to toe in mud.
You look great! We miss you all!
Kudos to Ryan for getting down and dirty with his daughter! What's not to love about a son-in-law who will walk and play in the rain with my grandbaby. He is a keeper! Remember "puddle walks"?
I'm glad mom has decided that Ryan is a keeper after two years of marriage. . . . you have to wonder what she's been thinking all this time.
